In Memory

David K. Gordon (born:March 19, 1930 died on January 15, 2018) He had several shows at Prince Street Gallery and was planning “In And Out of the Studio” an exhibition of pastels, watercolors, gouaches and prints for December 2017, However, just prior to his planned exhibit he was hospitalized due to complications from medical treatments and this show was cancelled. David is known for his beautiful work, his many graphic designs of announcements, newsletters and catalogs, his patient efforts and use of his talent and many skills to support the mission of the gallery.

About David

David K. Gordon revealed his keenly observed view of day-to-day life in New York City where he has spent his entire life. Using his skill as a draughtsman, enhanced through photography, he produced a personal and highly innovative exploration of his art in oils, pastels and prints.
He had his first pastel exhibition in 2001 at the Tatitscheff Gallery in New York, followed by shows there in 2003 and 2004. Consequently, he was featured in a major article in Pastel Journal. He had been a member of the Prince Street Gallery where he exhibited work in oil, pastel and print in 2009, an all print show in September, 2013 and 2015. Other exhibitions include those at the Spencertown Academy of Art in 2008 and the Quick Center for the Arts 2009. He was a member of SAGA, Society of American Graphic Artists.
The New York Times, in a review of his show, stated:

“Mr. Gordon…gives things like paper bags, bisected muffins, rumpled dishtowels and culinary hardware — scattered or in altar-like formation — a shimmering animation.“ — Ken Johnson

about his show

David Gordon wrote the following for the show he planned shortly before his passing:

I look onto a high view of brownstones squatting below, tall buildings reaching toward the horizon, and the Hudson River snaking out of sight. This wholly serendipitous, even spontaneous collage of windows, chimneys, water towers, trees suddenly form for me a structural order, a casually harmonious design. Drawn to this natural chaos I find myself re-composing it all, inspired by its source and applying those unrelated, random visual moments into my paintings of landscapes and still lives. I am drawn to capture the unseen and overlooked. These become the raw ingredients that gave impetus and inspiration to the work in my present exhibition.
